Where do Germany’s happiest people live? The City Ranking 2026 reveals some surprising results: Erfurt has become Germany’s happiest major city for the first time, overtaking the previous leader, Kassel. While cities such as Augsburg, Düsseldorf, and Kiel stand out for their high levels of life satisfaction, wealthy metropolitan areas such as Munich and Frankfurt am Main rank considerably lower.

Why Is Erfurt Germany’s Happiest City?
With a score of 7.74, Erfurt has climbed from sixth place to the top of the ranking. The capital of Thuringia stands out for its affordable rents, abundant green spaces, high environmental quality, and relatively stable economic conditions.
Interestingly, Erfurt ranks only 27th when it comes to objective quality-of-life indicators. This means its residents are considerably more satisfied with their lives than the city’s economic and structural conditions might suggest.
Life Satisfaction in Germany’s Major Cities Continues to Rise
Average life satisfaction across Germany’s 40 largest cities reached 7.02 points in 2026, up from 6.97 points the previous year. However, the increase was smaller than in recent years.
One particularly interesting finding is that the proportion of dissatisfied residents has fallen from 10.6% to 8.6% over the past two years. At the same time, the share of highly satisfied residents has remained almost unchanged at around 45%.
In other words, fewer people are unhappy, but this does not necessarily mean that people are becoming significantly happier overall.
Regional Differences: Western Germany Has the Most Satisfied Residents
Major cities in western Germany recorded the highest average life satisfaction, with a score of 7.07. Düsseldorf, Krefeld, Aachen, and Duisburg performed particularly well.
Cities in northwestern Germany, including Kiel, Lübeck, and Braunschweig, also showed significant improvements.
By contrast, major cities in southern Germany achieved an average score of just 6.98 despite their relatively high incomes and well-developed infrastructure. Eastern German cities followed closely behind with an average of 6.91 points.
Wealth Does Not Automatically Make People Happy
The city ranking demonstrates that a high objective quality of life does not necessarily translate into greater personal happiness.
For example, Karlsruhe ranks second in terms of objective location and quality-of-life factors but comes only 37th in the happiness ranking.
Munich also performs relatively poorly, ranking 24th with a score of 6.98.
High housing costs, economic inequality, and pressure on public infrastructure can negatively affect life satisfaction, even in wealthy cities.
Germany’s Least Happy Cities in 2026
At the bottom of the ranking are mainly cities where residents face social, economic, or demographic challenges.
| Rank | City | Happiness Score 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 36 | Nuremberg | 6.71 |
| 37 | Karlsruhe | 6.57 |
| 38 | Frankfurt am Main | 6.51 |
| 39 | Wiesbaden | 6.50 |
| 40 | Rostock | 5.80 |
Rostock ranks last by a considerable margin. Possible explanations include its ageing population, the high proportion of single-person households, and relatively low homeownership rates.
Conclusion: Quality of Life Is About More Than Income
The SKL City Ranking 2026 highlights that happiness depends on more than wealth, income, or infrastructure. Affordable housing, a pleasant living environment, and favourable social conditions also play an important role.
Erfurt is a striking example of how a relatively small major city can achieve exceptionally high levels of life satisfaction.
For expats, international professionals, and students considering where to live in Germany, the results offer an interesting perspective: the country’s largest and wealthiest cities are not necessarily the places where residents feel happiest.
